I maestri del colore

Dopo la grande acqua alta che ha invaso Venezia il 12 novembre del 2019, era normale vedere per le calli grandi quantità di libri, oggetti e mobili accatastati, pronti per essere buttati nella spazzatura, perché rimasti per ore sotto l’acqua salmastra della laguna. Molte persone hanno colto l’occasione per ripulire cantine e magazzini. In quei giorni sono stata fortunata, e mi sono imbattuta in un centinaio di fascicoli degli anni Sessanta della serie “I Maestri del Colore” pronti per il macero. Erano in perfette condizioni, non avevano preso acqua: immediatamente li ho presi e portati nel mio studio. Sono rimasti lì a guardarmi per lungo tempo, mentre pensavo a come poterli utilizzare e a come sfruttare al massimo quelle stampe con colori saturi e brillanti, che riproducono le opere dei grandi Maestri dal Trecento fino al Novecento. Finalmente il momento giusto è arrivato. Ho deciso di lavorare su queste riproduzioni con collages che uniscono carta e tessuti, e in cui anche il filo della cucitura ha una presenza e un valore specifico. Questa volta ho deciso di applicare un processo diverso rispetto ai miei soliti collages, dove cerco soprattutto il contrasto e lo spaccarsi dell’immagine. Qui invece ho deciso di partire dall’immagine stessa, per integrare e accompagnare le forme e i colori della stampa con le forme e i colori delle mie carte e dei miei tessuti. Il richiamo del colore di queste vecchie stampe è troppo forte e presente per poterlo nascondere o violare: l’immagine mi chiede di assecondarlo, mi suggerisce di ponderare bene ogni taglio, ogni raccordo, ogni scelta di colore e posizione dei pezzi che aggiungo. La cucitura del tessuto a volte disegna delle linee che vanno oltre alla propria funzione di raccordo tra tessuto e carta, perché sono indipendenti pur cercando di seguire l’armonia e le linee strutturali della riproduzione del dipinto.

After the tremendous flood occurred in Venice on 12 November 2019, along the calli you could see huge amounts of books, objects and furniture piled up, ready to be thrown in the rubbish because they had remained for hours in the brackish water of the lagoon. Many people took the opportunity to clean out their cellars and storerooms. In those days, I was lucky and came across a hundred or so magazines from the 1960s of the series “I Maestri del Colore”, ready to be thrown in the trash. They were in perfect conditions, completely dry. I immediately brought them to my studio. I did not touch them for long, I thought deeply how to use them and how to make the most of those prints with saturated and brilliant colors, which reproduced the works of the great masters from the fourteenth to the twentieth century. At last, the right moment arrived. I decided to work on these reproductions with collages that combine paper and fabric, and in which even the thread of the stitching has a meaning and a specific value. This time I decided to apply a different process than the one used in my usual collages, where I mainly look for the contrast and the splitting of the image. On the contrary, here I started directly from the picture trying to integrate its shapes and colors with those of my papers and fabric. The charm of the color of these old prints is too strong and present to be hidden or violated: the image asks me to go along with it, suggests to think carefully about each cut and joint, each choice of color and position of the pieces I add.
The seam of the fabric sometimes draws lines that go beyond their own function meant to link fabric and paper, because they are independent even though they follow the harmony and structural lines of the reproduction of the painting.
